Hobart – Salamanca Markets

The Salamanca markets held every Saturday in the CBD of Hobart are the most extensive in Tasmania. Even though it was a kind of drizzly day, wild horses could not have kept us away. There was a lot going on.

How it started outThese markets started out as a fruit and vegetable market. It has greatly expanded since.

Market FringeHere is a very small portion of the market.

Crowded, even in the rain

This is a more representative view.

Strange Critter at the MarketsYou can get most anything there. I’m not sure whether or not you have to shear it yourself.

HoneyEveryone knows about the healing power of honey.

Boutique Sheep CheesesI bought some boutique sheep’s cheese. It was a very nice soft cheese with no cholesterol (ha ha).

Living StatueThere were numerous entertainment acts to keep the shoppers interested. Here is a living statue colonial.

Part of the Market ServiceThankfully we got to listen to a single bagpiper. I’ve never heard a group sound in tune.

Sout American Folk GroupHere is a group playing South American (Peruvian, I think) music. They sounded quite good.

Navy BandEven the Navy band was there. They were in Hobart to celebrate the Australian Wooden Boat Festival which was on that weekend in Hobart.
