Mt. Field National Park - Tall Trees Walk

After lunch we took a walk through the Tall Trees Circuit at Mt Field National Park. These old tall trees are swamp gums, or more scientifically, Eucalyptus Regnans, which means eucalyptus to rule. Most of the taller trees in this area have been around since the early 1800's, the last period of devestating bush fires in this particular area.

We're off to see the tall trees.

Here is the base of one of the swamp gums.

The swamp gum is characterized by a dark lower bark on the trunk of the tree with a white upper trunk and stringy bark between.

Linda is using a clinometer (and associated trig tables) to estimate the height of one of these giants.

One always hears that one can estimate the age of a tree by counting the rings. But it is not as easy as all that. Depending upon climatic conditions, there can be multiple or no annual (or very faint) rings.
