Salmon Ponds

The Salmon Ponds near New Norfolk is the oldest trout hatchery in the Southern hemisphere. It was established in the early 1860's. It is still operational although only seasonal. There were no hatchlings being raised there when we visited. A lot of effort has been made to populate the grounds with a variety of tree species, both native and European. I was mostly interest in the fish though. A number of different species of trout and salmon (about 8) were segregated into ponds where the visitors could feed them.

Chuck and Linda are admiring the pondscape

Some nice cover for the smaller fish

Atlantic Salmon

One of the more interesting ponds contained a number of albino rainbow trout.

This is currently being used as a hatchery building.

There was also a small trout fishing museum on the grounds. Here is part of the tied flies exhibit.

There was another exhibit of rods used for trout fishing.
